The Mediterranean monk seal, numbering fewer than 500 individuals in the world, is one of the world's most endangered mammals. This species feeds on a variety of fish as well as octopus and squid. Mediterranean monk seals are diurnal and sensitive to disturbance. They have long been harvested for their skin and meat as well as being killed for competing with fishermen. Pollution, boat traffic, net entanglements and other human related problems have also lead to this seals decline. This specimen, originating from Northern Africa, was cast from a particularly large individual.
