The domestic cat, or house cat, is the most common member of the Felidae family worldwide. There are an estimated 100 million cats in the western world. There are over 100 breeds currently recognized, and that number grows yearly. All of the current breeds of domestic cat are descendants of the wild cat, originally native to Asia and Africa.
Periodontal diseases are a group of diseases that affect the tissues that support and anchor the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease results in the destruction of the gums, alveolar bone (the part of the jaws where the teeth arise) and the outer layer of the tooth root.
