The giant anteater, as its name suggests, is an insectivore that eats a variety of insects including termites and ants. This species has evolved a long sticky tongue that is specialized for lapping its small prey from within their mounds, and their tongues can reach up to 45cm (18in) in length. Giant anteaters also use their long fore claws to retrieve insects from mounds and for self defense.
